Honey Moon Sewing: The Bettine Dress.

Finally after 6 month of writing wedding dress posts and sewing on my wedding dress, I managed to sew a casual dress! It is the Tilly and the Buttons Bettine dress! I finished it before we left for our honey moon and so I had the opportunity to get the photographs taken in Corfu, Greece - where we spent a fantastic time!

Pockets :)

I'm not sure what exactly the fabric is other than it most certainly contains polyester. It is very soft to the touch and draps nicely. That's why I have chosen it for this style of loose fitting dress. I can even wear the dress with tights and the fabric is not clinging!

I've cut a size 3 for the bodice and graded up to a size 4 at the hips. However, I always seem to forget that Tillys pattern are a bit short for me. So instead of hitting me over the knee the hem stops somewhere mid calf and makes sitting down rather awkward.

For my next version - and yes there will be one - I also have to add some width to the shoulders as they are a bit tight. This dress is actually the first dress where I managed to rip a seam. I was sitting in the car and bending down to pull the lever for the petrol lid when I heard a rip. The seams directly under my arm pit had ripped apart.

Here you can see that it is really a bit short on me.
For a quick fix I stitched several times over the weak spot in this version - and I'm careful how far I stretch my arms. So far it is holding up.

Other than this it is a very comfy dress that came quickly together. It was also the first time that I added elastic in a waistband and I'm happy with how it turned out! I have already layed out the fabric for version two and hopefully will find some time next weekend to sew it.

On other terms, I need some fall sewing inspiration. I somehow do not know what to sew next and have spent the last couple of weeks to find inspiration. But haven't been able to. It is really frustrating to have time to sew but not to know what to make. So tell me what are you making for your fall wardrobe and which colors are you choosing? Hopefully the spark will fly over to me!!!

  1. I plan to make a maxi skirt suit using wool/tweed in autumnal shades of gold. You must be the only person who doesn't already have a great long list! As you have patience and obviously relish a long project, how about a coat?

    1. I know - usually I have a very long list. But not this year. I have already registered with a Craftsy class to make a Vogue Coat and I'm now waiting for the pattern to arrive. I'm looking forward to see your make! Gold shades sound lovely, hm.

  2. Beautiful! This sold the pattern to me! I have the same issue (fit at the shoulders and a too-short hem) with some of Tilly's patterns. The fabric is gorgeous, such a lovely colour on you. For fall I am planning on making some basics (culottes, blazer, maybe coat, skirts) with some added detailing (studs, topstitching, pockets, embellishments) in basic plain colours such as black, red, blue, nude, grey tones etc. We will see how that turns out and whether I even manage to finish anything with the move and all :)

    1. Thank you Charlie. Without having a color analysis, I wouldn't have gone for this color. But now I love it :) It sounds as if you have planned a capsule wardrobe - the best way to sew and make sure the clothes fit together. I should try as well.

  3. Beautiful Bettine! I'm seriously tempted by that pattern. I wrote a blog post about my autumn sewing plans here: http://www.ladysewalot.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/autumn-winter-capsule-wardrobe-planning.html :)

    1. Thanks Lauren. Bettine is really comfy and I can't wait to make a jersey version! I just had a look at your plans and gosh are you organised! Maybe that might help me out of my dark hole as well :)

  4. Glad to hear you managed to rescue your armpit tear! It looks like the perfect, comfortable dress to pack for a holiday (or honeymoon!) My autumn/winter plans so far consist of sewing a needlecord Delphine skirt, jumbo cord dungarees and knitting my first cardigan.

    1. I actually discovered another hole only yesterday. It seems I have to sew several lines over the weak spot, grrrr. Good look with knitting your first cardigan. I'm sure it will look amazing. Which pattern are you going to use?

  5. It looks lovely - I'm sure it won't look too short if you're wearing it with tights. I always find that Tilly's patterns come up short on me too. As for autumn sewing plans, I'm in the middle of another Emery dress in umbrella print fabric, and I'm planning to make a shirt dress from a vintage pattern but I can't make up my mind about what fabric to use! Hope you find some inspiration soon!

  6. I think this dress looks lovely on you too, it's too bad the arm seam ripped. Greece sounds like an amazing honeymoon destination. As for fall sewing, I have cardi's, henleys, pants, skirts, jackets all on my plate :)

  7. I love the fabric, just gorgeous. Although I love Tilly's patterns, when this one first came out I wasn't too keen. Since then I have seen a few that I have actually really liked but yours is the loveliest. It really suits your slim shape.!!

  9. Hi there, a lovely Bettine! I just made one today from Pointe Roma and its so comfy. Funnily enough, I used that exact fabric to make the Lisette Traveller and it frays chronically, might be why it rips so well?
