The other day, I was thinking about my blog and about how I started to sew. I then remembered the first item I ever sewed and was wondering if you, my lovely followers, can still remember the first item you ever sewed? I would love to hear/read about it and will make the start by telling you about what I sewed.

The little cube on the right site of this picture was my first sewn item :) It still exists and is well-loved. |
The first item I sewed was a little cuddle house for my guinea pigs :) Surprised? Yes you can make cuddle homes not only for dogs and cats but also for little rodents. I had bought already a little hammock and tunnel from the Internet. When looking at them, I thought it can't be that difficult to make by myself. So, I started to ask my grandma if she would teach me how to use a sewing machine and how to sew.

That was 4 years ago. I still remember sitting there with my grandma winding the bobbins by hand. I found a tutorial about how to make a cuddle house on the Internet and bought fabric and quilting wadding. My grandma was a bit surprised (or should I say shocked) about what I wanted to sew, but helped me none-the less.

I think we were both surprised at the end result - a lovely cuddle house for my piggies. My success resulted in making even more cuddle homes, pyramids, shoes, hammocks and bags. I even made my own patterns after having a look on ready made ones on the Internet. So, yes that is the first item that I ever made and that got me into sewing! What is yours?

The first thing I made (which I had forgotten all about until I started sewing) was a patchwork quilt that I made for a teacher who was going on maternity leave, when I was about 10. We had lots of fabric sample books at school that the shop across the road donated, and I spent our free time half hour on Fridays cutting out 100 10x10cm squares (I though this would make me a 1m quilt, I didn't understand the concept of seam allowances!) and then sewed it together on my granny's old hand-turn sewing machine. I don't actually remember much about the sewing process itself - my mum had never really sewed, and my Granny didn't live nearby, so I'm not sure who taught me to use the sewing machine! Probably my dad actually! WIll have to dig out a photo of it at some point!
ReplyDeleteIt must have you taken quite a while to cut out all these little squares - I suppose you used scissors and not a rotary cutter :) I am sure your teacher loved the quilt. If you find a photo let me know, I like quilts a lot. And it is amazing that your dad taught you sewing! Must have been a lot of fun :)
DeleteThe first thing I sew was a pair of shorts. I traced the pattern from an old shorts of mine and sort of made up the rest. AND of course I forgot seam allowances AND I didn't know about seam finishing ...
ReplyDeleteThey ended up very low rise (forgot to add allowances for making elastic casing on the top), with very tight/short crotch ...
But I wore them with pride AND made my mum and dad many shorts all toolow rise and tight crotch ...
However, now I know about sewing patterns etc, my favorite thing to sew is still shorts maybe because they're quick to sew and very usable (get worn everyday).
Wow, shorts were the first item you sewed? I am totally scarred by them - about fitting the crotch! Can you remember how old you were? And I am sure your parents were wearing the shorts proudly as well :)
DeleteVery young, maybe 8, sewing sheets and blankets for my dolls :) I seem to remember there was some lace involved.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been great to make bed sheets for your doll. I just have a picture of a doll in a white dress lying in a wooden cradle covered with lovely blankets in my head. And you even used lace - what a lucky doll. I remember that my grandma used to knit cloth for all my dolls: little trousers, jumpers, shirts, hats and even tiny mittens. I just wonder where everything has gone.
DeleteOh my goodness, I heart this post so much. You have house pigs! I miss my house bunny alot. First project I sewed was back at school (aged 9/10) where I made a patchwork cushion, but my teacher terrified me especially when I broke the needle! I think my Mum still has this cushion somewhere :)
ReplyDeleteI love house bunnies as well. I had 2 when I was a teenager :) I am glad the teacher didn't scare you off completely. And that just because of a needle! But I hope the cushion is a nice memory anyway.
